Safety Tips for the Elderly for Outside the Home

Just because as we age we are not as physically fit does not mean we need to stop enjoying the world and being independent. But it also doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t accept the physical limitations that come with age. Here are some safety tips for the elderly when they travel from the home.


Many elderly are staying more active later in life, and that is great and should be encouraged. It is important to keep in mind that for the elderly, just crossing the street can be an adventure. As we age our reflexes slow and our strength weakens. Many activities that we do now, with age turn into real efforts. There is not just the chance of falling or accident that is to be concern for the elderly. With age one also becomes at greater risk of being a target of crime. These increased dangers of simply crossing the street, shopping, driving a car or getting money from an ATM doesn’t mean they shouldn’t go out and enjoy the world and stay independent. It does mean that precautions should be taken. Here are some simple tips to help keep an elderly person stay safe when they venture outside the home.


  1. An elderly person should wear shoes that are comfortable and in good repair

  2. When shopping an older people should considering using a cart instead of a basket even if they are not purchasing many items. The cart will help with balance.

  3. It is important not to carry to many packages home. This can be very dangerous. Either more than one trip can be made or items can be delivered.

  4. An elderly person should avoid wearing headphones. They can be distracting and can also cut off an important sense for be aware of what is going on around you in the environment.

  5. I a person is planning on being away from home for an extended period of time it is a good idea they take their medication with them.

  6. They should always let someone know where they are going and the route they plan to take. They should also inform them of what time they plan to return.

  7. It is important to keep emergency items in the car, such as a hat, sun block, and shovel, bottle of water, battery charger, a spare tire, flashlight, umbrella, maps and first aid kit.

  8. One should keep a fully charged cell phone (with the charger) with you at all times in case of emergency.
